Sacrifice Hit, or Sacrifice Bunt
A bunt that gives up an out to move a runner.
What it actually is. A bunt that gives up an out on purpose to move a runner up a base. Also called a sacrifice bunt.
What a scout reads off it. Run expectancy tables have been clear on this for forty years: with a runner on first and nobody out, bunting him to second lowers the runs a team can expect, because an out is worth more than the base. It survives where the run matters more than the runs, which is a tie in the ninth, and in youth ball where the defense may not make the play at all.
At Little League and travel ball. At Little League and lower travel levels the bunt is a strong play, for the opposite reason it is a weak one in the majors: the throw is likely to go wrong, so the sacrifice frequently is not one.
