Sacrifice Fly
A fly ball out that scores a runner from third with fewer than two outs.
What it actually is. A fly ball caught for an out that is deep enough to score a runner from third. It does not count as an at bat, so it does not hurt a batting average.
What a scout reads off it. The sacrifice fly is the rare case where the rulebook agrees the hitter did his job. With a runner on third and fewer than two out, the deep fly ball is the outcome the at bat was for.
How it lies to you. The rule has been on and off the books repeatedly since 1908, so career sacrifice fly totals are not comparable across eras. The stat as it stands dates from 1954.
