Quality Start
At least six innings and no more than three earned runs.
What it actually is. Six innings or more with three earned runs or fewer.
What a scout reads off it. The bar is deliberately low, and the complaint that a quality start allows a 4.50 earned run average misses what it is for: it measures whether a starter did the job the game asks of him, which is to go deep enough and keep it close. Most quality starts are far better than the minimum.
