Strikeout
A strikeout by a pitcher. The out with no chance of a hit.
What it actually is. The scorekeeper's mark for a strikeout, and the way pitchers' totals are spoken about. Backwards when the hitter is caught looking.
What a scout reads off it. For a pitcher, strikeouts are the outcome the defense cannot ruin, which is why every fielding-independent measure is built around them. A pitcher whose strikeouts are holding up is fine even when his earned run average is not.
