Innings Pitched
Outs recorded, divided by three. 6.2 means six innings and two outs.
What it actually is. Innings pitched, written as outs recorded divided by three. The decimal is not a fraction: .1 means one extra out and .2 means two.
What a scout reads off it. Workload is the hidden half of every rate stat on the mound. A 3.20 earned run average over 200 innings and the same number over 60 are two entirely different contributions, and the second one is a reliever.
Where the lines are. Two hundred innings is the modern marker of a durable starter, a bar far fewer pitchers clear now than in the 1970s. Old Hoss Radbourn threw 678 2/3 innings in 1884, which is a different sport.
