Hit by Pitch
Hit by the pitch: the batter takes first.
What it actually is. The batter is struck by a pitch and awarded first base, unless he swung or made no attempt to get out of the way.
What a scout reads off it. A handful of hitters take a hit by pitch as a genuine skill, standing in on the inner half and wearing the ones that get away. It is worth almost exactly as much as a walk, and for a few players it is worth a full win over a career.
Where the lines are. Hughie Jennings was hit 287 times in the 1890s and Craig Biggio 285 in the modern game. Twenty in a season is a lot and usually belongs to a hitter who crowds the plate on purpose.
