Error
A misplay that lets a batter or runner reach or advance.
What it actually is. A misplay the official scorer judges a fielder should have made.
What a scout reads off it. The error is a nineteenth-century idea that has survived by inertia. It only counts mistakes on balls a fielder actually reached, so the shortstop with no range makes fewer errors than the one who gets to everything, and the box score calls him the better fielder.
How it lies to you. Everything modern in defensive measurement exists because of that flaw. Range is worth several times more than sure hands and the error column cannot see range at all.
