Called strikes plus whiffs, out of all pitches.
What it actually is. Called strikes plus whiffs, divided by total pitches.
What a scout reads off it. One number for how hard a pitch is to deal with, whether it beats the hitter or freezes him. It is the fastest way to evaluate a new pitch a pitcher has added, because it needs far fewer pitches to mean something than results-based numbers do.
Where the lines are. About 30 percent is very good and 25 percent is roughly average.
