Single
A hit that gets the batter to first base.
What it actually is. A hit that gets the batter to first base and nowhere else.
What a scout reads off it. Singles are the least valuable hit and the most common one, and a hitter whose game is built on them is depending on the men behind him to do the rest. What separates a good singles hitter is speed on the bases and the ability to keep the number up without striking out.
How it lies to you. Lahman and most historical databases do not store singles. They are hits minus doubles minus triples minus home runs, which is how this site computes them.
