Catcher
The one position that faces the other way. He calls the pitch, frames it, blocks what gets past, throws out the running game and runs the defense, and he does it in a crouch a hundred and fifty times a night.
The job. The one position that faces the other way. He calls the pitch, frames it, blocks what gets past, throws out the running game and runs the defense, and he does it in a crouch a hundred and fifty times a night.
What separates a good one. Almost everything a good catcher does is invisible in a box score. The measurable part is framing, which is worth more than most people believe: the best receivers steal a run or two a week by making borderline pitches look like strikes.
At youth level. At youth level catching is where games are decided, because a catcher who cannot block turns every wild pitch into a base and every runner on third into a run.
