Division III
About 380 programs, the largest division in the sport
What it actually is. No athletic scholarships at all. Players here are choosing a school first and a roster second, which is not a lesser choice.
The money. None athletically. Academic and need-based aid only, and at some D3 schools that is worth more than a partial D1 offer.
The part nobody tells you. Players get drafted out of D3. Not many, but the door is not shut, and the top D3 programs play a serious schedule.
Why the summer matters more than the season. The Cape Cod League and the other elite summer leagues are played with WOOD bats. College baseball is played with BBCOR metal, which is capped near wood but is more forgiving on mishits and has a bigger effective barrel. A hitter who produces on the Cape has done it with the tool he will use as a professional, and scouts weight those two months accordingly. It is the single best reason a college hitter's numbers do not translate the way people expect.
