Where it sits. The 2nd of 3 for Oregon State. Back to back: they had won it the year before as well. North Carolina has never won one. Reaching the final is as close as that program has come. Beat the top overall seed twice on the way and repeated as champion. They came in as no. 3 regional seed at 49-18.
What the tournament looked like that year. Same path, but the championship becomes a best-of-three series. That format ran from 2003 through present.
