1998 College World Series
Southern California over Arizona State at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium.
What happened. Southern California won the 1998 College World Series, beating Arizona State in the final, under Mike Gillespie. It was played at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium, Omaha.
Where it sits. The 12th for Southern California, and still the last one. The wait had been 20 years, which is most of a coaching career. Arizona State had already won 5 of them, most recently in 1981, and has not won one since.
Gorilla Ball's last day. Southern California 21, Arizona State 14. Nine home runs in a championship game. The bat rules that followed are a direct response to this scoreline.
What the tournament looked like that year. Two four-team double elimination brackets, the winners meeting in a single championship game. That format ran from 1988 through 1998.
The ballpark. Sixty-one tournaments. The reason Omaha means what it means.
