Save Situation
The spots where finishing the game earns a save.
How it actually works. The conditions are specific and they are what created the modern closer: one pitcher held back for the ninth inning, whether or not the ninth is the hardest inning of that particular game.
Why it is done, and when it is wrong. Managers have known for a long time that the highest-leverage moment often comes in the seventh with the bases loaded rather than in the ninth with nobody on. Using the best reliever there is right and it costs a statistic that agents and arbitration panels pay attention to, which is why it happens less than the numbers say it should.
